The vision for the Questa to Red River Trail is both simple and powerful: connect communities, restore landscape, and create a sustainable multi use recreation experience through one of northern New Mexico’s most dramatic canyons.

As part of GO Unlimited’s Trails+ grant project funded by the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division, our team is working to identify trail access opportunities in preparation for construction of this long anticipated corridor between the Village of Questa and the Town of Red River. Our focus includes evaluating potential trailheads, parking areas, roadway crossings, and connection points to ensure the trail is accessible, safe, and functional for a wide range of users.

The trail concept grew from the removal of mining infrastructure associated with the former MolyCorp Mine, now known as the Chevron Mine. As pipelines were removed along the Red River corridor, an opportunity emerged to repurpose disturbed areas for recreation. While early ideas considered following the exact pipeline alignment, planners quickly recognized that a trail requires a more natural, user centered route through the canyon.

Initial Phase I planning concluded in 2018 through a collaborative effort led by the Carson National Forest, the National Forest Foundation, Enchanted Circle Trails Association, local governments, and community partners.

This multi use, sustainable recreation trail will connect people to land, water, and one another. It is designed to enhance quality of life for residents, strengthen tourism, and support economic development in both communities.

By identifying strategic and inclusive access points now, GO Unlimited is helping ensure that when the trail moves forward, it will serve families, cyclists, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities. Thoughtful planning today lays the groundwork for a stronger, more connected tomorrow.
