Our mission is to provide individuals whose mobility has been compromised with the opportunity to participate in both outdoor recreational and sporting activities. We focus our efforts on disabled veterans, children, and wheelchair bound residents of New Mexico interested in the great outdoors.
Our Goals:
•Provide challenging outdoor adventure activities in a supportive environment.
•Provide a variety of outdoor activities to accommodate different levels of interest and ability.
•Establish a supportive social network for people with disabilities and able-bodied individuals.
•Promote a healthy way of living for persons with disabilities.
Program Goals:
We at Global Opportunities Unlimited can see the many different
possibilities, and realize that it is time for the opportunities to be
engaged. For example: Therapeutic riding,
water skiing, and other outdoor activities were hard if not impossible
activities for a disabled person to accomplish 10 years ago. Now, by using
the latest technology together with a supportive
social network of people with disabilities and able-bodied individuals,
We are bridging a gap in society as well as bettering the quality of life
for people with disabilities.
1) Equine Assisted Therapeutic Riding Program: Therapeutic riding has been used since the early 1950s in Europe as a tool for improving the lives of individuals with physical disabilities. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. The importance of strength and balance can not be overstated.
2) To provide Mobility Impaired hunters with hunting opportunities, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish offers special hunt permits for individuals with severe mobility restrictions. To further enhance the quality of Mobility Impaired hunts, Global Opportunities Unlimited offers assistance to these individuals.
3) Adaptive water skiing at some of New Mexico's
beautiful lakes is another frontier. There is a
successful
program in Alabama that we have been in contact with and hope to
accomplish the same here.
The dream is to bring
mobility impaired people outdoors to experience freedom, independence,
excitement and the beauty of the outdoors!
