Sandia Lakes

Our trips for young anglers with disabilities just got a little sweeter. With the support of Sandia Pueblo, a new fishing lake wasadded to the list of locations for children's fishing trips. This past June, 28 children with disabilities accompanied by family and friendsspent the afternoon fishing, barbequing, and exploring the newly renovated accessible Sandia Lakes. The afternoon started off with excited young anglers anxious to get their hands on a fishing pole and stake out a spot on the lake. The children and family members were thrilled to have a paved walk way around the lake allowing them to go where ever theyplease. We set them up with fishing poles and started fishing. For the first time some of the children felt confident enough to castlures which is a notable step up in ability. Like other children these young anglers learn exponentially faster than adults when giventhe opportunity and support. The mid day heat receded behind the cottonwood trees and the sounds of young anglers catching their first fish echoed back andforth like young pioneers finding their first gold nugget. “I got one!” and then “I got another one!”, you could see their confidencelevel rise to that of a professional bass fisherman. Not many things are more gratifying than seeing children laugh, joke, and overflowwith excitement.Children and their families are setting up intermediate trips with us to further pursue their child’s passion for outdoor experiences. We are dedicated to teaching these children as much as they would like to learn about the outdoors empowering them with experience, knowledge and understanding. Similar lessons as those taught to the boy and girl scouts...the opportunities are unlimited.
